Thought of the Week with thanks to Avi Teleki. War is a theme that resonates with us especially during this difficult time for Israel. Therefore it is no surprise that when the opening verse of this week’s Torah reading speaks about going out to battle, we naturally think about our homeland. However our sages comment that this battle also entails a spiritual element. Everyone has a good inclination, as well as an evil inclination. The goal is to live Torah-true lives but unfortunately there are unwanted parts that try to disturb and make us sway from this path. One needs to wage war and defeat these negative influences. We are guaranteed of a victory as the verse concludes, ‘G-d will deliver him into your hands’. May this personal victory be combined with a victory for Israel swiftly and without further delay!
