Thought of the Week with thanks to Yudi NewAt the seder, the “wicked” son asks “what is this work for you?” The Ksav Sofer explains that his question is not “why are you eating the Korban Pesach?” – he gets the celebrations – but rather why are you busying yourself with all these preparations? Surely, someone else can do the hard work!

We respond that it is a sacrifice to commemorate that G-d Himself, in all His glory, passed-over the Jewish homes and redeemed His people. He didn’t leave it to his angels or messengers – even though He had plenty and it would have been more convenient. G-d reached out directly to His people. On Pesach, through our direct and personal efforts in the lead up, we have the opportunity to experience and relive that closeness and direct relationship with G-d – may we all merit to it.
