Thought of the Week with thanks to Michelle Coleman.  At the conclusion of Ne’ilah on Yom Kippur, we sound the shofar and call out “Le’shanah haba’ah b’Yerushalayim” – “next year in Jerusalem”. The only other occasion on which we say these words is Pesach, as we finish the Seder. Why is this wish expressed on these two occasions only, and not on every day of the year?

In the Talmud (Rosh Hashanah 11a) there are two opinions as to when the future redemption will occur. One holds that we were freed from Egypt in Nissan (the month in which Pesach falls) and that the future redemption will also take place in Nissan. The other opinion holds that we were freed from Egypt in Nissan but will be redeemed in the future in Tishrei (when Yom Kippur is held).

Given the association of both Pesach and Yom Kippur with the final redemption, it is particularly appropriate to express our yearning for it on these two occasions. Le’shanah haba’ah bi’Rushalayim!
