Thought of the Week with thanks to Gaby Silver. As we brush the dust, sweat and food residue off our clothing after the onslaught of the High Holidays, we could be forgiven for feeling a degree of fatigue with all things Jewish as we saddle up again for Shabbat. For many the Sukkah is still standing somewhat forlornly and the lulav and etrog are still lying around the house, as the exhaustion of the chagim gives way seamlessly to the relentless march of everyday life.

Yet this is no ordinary Shabbat. The description of the creation of the universe in Bereishis is almost unnerving in its calm, quiet simplicity. For comparison, the giving of the Torah on Sinai is afforded far greater pyrotechnical pizzazz. Yet we are literally talking about the moments that absolutely everything came into being.

This is an opportunity for all of us to take a similar approach to our service of Hashem. After all the physical, spiritual, emotional and intellectual drama of the past couple of months, perhaps this is Hashem’s way of telling us to focus away from the spectacular, and just find a quiet space inside ourselves for our own rebirth, to recreate our spiritual lives and rededicate ourselves to Him and His service.
